Nutrition facts

People are all about checking nutrition facts and labels. Wholesome foods do not contain nutrition facts as they are fresh and home made. Some people have no choice but to buy packaged food because of lack of time… I would recommend preparing meals ahead and freezing them however if for some reason it can’t be done, reading food labels properly is a must.

First you should check the ingredients to make sure the first one listed is not sugar or syrup, then the serving size to see if the calorie content, vitamins and minerals are relevant. Calories from saturated fat or trans fats are the worst. Sodium level are to be monitored as it is sometimes used as a preservative. Carbohydrates should not exceed 15 g per portion if fibers are low which makes the food item high in sugar.

Beware of food labels as they are not always 100 % reliable. Artificial and natural flavors can mean the same thing depending on the product so if it is labeled no artificial flavors but still has natural flavoring listed in the ingredients that would mean the label was used for marketing purposes. Zero fat products are usually high in sugar and zero sugar products high in fat so buy packaged food that has natural products such as fruits, grains or vegetables as a main ingredient.
