the chicken and egg dilemma

Is eating eggs on a regular basis healthy?

Eggs and diseases:

Patients diagnosed with high blood cholesterol are advised to avoid egg yolks as they contain high levels of cholesterol (186mg). The human body absorbs only 7% of cholesterol from food as it produces it has the capacity to produce its own cholesterol. Nowadays the egg ban has been released and people can consume it freely within a balanced diet containing fibers from fruits vegetables and whole grains.

What is a healthy egg?

There are various types of eggs in the market; organic, free range, regular and omega 3 rich eggs. Unfortunately the word regular does not stand for chickens running around, eating grains and laying eggs in a nest, but rather hens kept in a cage and fed large amounts of grains to serve the high demand for big sized chicken breast and daily breakfast omelets. Chicken sometimes reach a point were they are unable to walk because of the pressure created by the increased weight of their breasts. They are fed grains with antibiotics and growth hormones to reach an early maturity to fulfill the market demand.

Industrials that specialize in egg distribution use unethical methods to maximize profits such as battery cages for poultry, the name comes from the arrangement of rows and columns sharing common divider walls resembling the cells of a battery. Thus creating numerous debates among animal lovers due to the extreme measures used by industrial farms that is harming chickens.

Some studies show that an egg laid in a cage has slightly more saturated fat (the bad fat) because of the lack of physical activity. As for the omega 3 (good fats) content it is three times more than the usual egg if hens are fed linseeds, which are a very good source of omega 3.

Products derived from eggs have a wide utility in bakeries and restaurants. Eggs can be transformed into pasteurized liquids and powders that have a long shelf life which is not the best option. Consuming good quality eggs depends on the chicken’s capacity to lay eggs naturally in a peaceful environment such as a farm while roaming around freely.

Do not be fooled by labels, organic chickens are sometimes only fed certified organic food in cages, without allowing them to run around in open air fields. The label organic only stands for feeding chicken organic grains and not ethical treatment of poultry. It is best to make sure that the chicken or eggs you are buying are labeled free range and organic.

Eating eggs should be part of a healthy lifestyle. Eggs are full of vitamins and minerals and should be consumed as part of a healthy lifestyle with nutritious food combinations. People with cardiovascular diseases should eat eggs moderately and increase their daily fibers (oats, grains, legumes, fruits and veggies).
